Yesterday afternoon for some reason I thought it would be a good idea for me to try and bury a downspout from our house in an effort to move the rainwater away from the house as was advised by a contractor we know. Those who know me are aware of the fact that I am not what you would call very handy. Quite the opposite is true. I have made very few successful visits to Home Depot if you get my meaning.

I can do this I thought to myself as I watched an instructional 2 minute YouTube video. I found the parts I figured I needed and ordered them and they showed up a few days later. How hard can it be. Attached this plastic thing to the downspout. Attach that to the 20 feet of 3 inch plastic tile and put another thing on the other end and that was it. Piece of cake.

I’m sure a normal man/woman with minimal skills could handle this in a mere hour or two. I took slightly longer. It took me about 3 hours to get one of the plastic pieces back off of the tile as I wanted to see how it attached before doing anything else. Once that piece was separated again I started to dig. The problem with our yard is that we lost a maple tree last year in the storm and we had it taken out. It seems though that maple trees have a bunch of roots. They basically have a root every 2 inches or so. I think they are made out of a Kevlar type material as well. So it took me about 8 hours to dig a trench 20 feet. It probably is a personal best though.

Now I wait until it rains so I can see if what I did actually works. My track record on this working isn’t very good. To be a step ahead I’ve already started watching YouTube videos on how to fix an improperly installed buried downspout. Knowledge is key.

Until tomorrow….
